Sama Greenhouse updates
The hydroponics system in the greenhouse at our Sama Learning Center that was damaged during the cold winter is now up and running with leafy green vegetables, herbs, and strawberries! The wicking beds, one of our most successful experiments thus far, are growing many different vegetables and herbs due to watering them from below. Through these projects, we aim to grow plants in Sama that have never been grown before.
We are also trying out a new method to enhance plant growth called vermicomposting. This compost is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by earthworms, and it is considered to be a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer.
With these experiments, we hope to discover the best farming practices for locals in the high Himalayan village of Sama and help them to cultivate nutritious foods among even the harshest of climates.
