Greenhouse in Sama
We are so excited to share with you that our Greenhouse and chicken coop are finally ready! One of our SLC student’s family generously donated a small piece of their land to us on which we were able to build the greenhouse and the chicken coup.
Buying vegetables is very costly in Sama, and growing seasonal vegetables and plants are out of the question because of the harsh climate. Such realities only compound the difficulties for the people here of maintaining a nutritious diet. After months of research and planning, the greenhouse has been completed and is now fully operational. Several cool-season crops including kale, spinach, broccoli, cilantro, and beans have already been planted. We have also transplanted mints and chilies.
By applying innovative growing methods, we want to grow a variety of crops that will increase the nutritional value of the food we are able to provide to the SLC students. Our goal beyond that is to train the villagers how to construct their own simple greenhouses, which will benefit their local businesses, as well as improve their health by providing them with a more nutritious diet.
